First Volunteers for the Central SD CASA Program Sworn In

On June 16, 2025 Judge Bridget Mayer swore in the first three volunteers for the Central SD CASA Program. All prospective volunteers complete 30 hours of comprehensive training, where they learn about the child welfare system, the role of a CASA advocate, trauma-informed care, and how to effectively speak up for a child’s best interests. In addition to training, volunteers are required to observe court proceedings to gain a deeper understanding of how family court functions. Once these steps are completed, they are officially sworn in by a judge, granting them the authority to begin advocating on behalf of children in foster care.

After being sworn in, CASA volunteers are “activated,” meaning they are eligible to be assigned to a case. The Central SD CASA team works hand-in-hand with the court and each volunteer to ensure advocate suits the child(ren). This focused approach ensures that the child or children receive the volunteer’s full attention and commitment.

We recognize that effective advocacy depends on strong, respectful matches between volunteers and children. That’s why, at the Central SD CASA Program, we prioritize making thoughtful and intentional matches to support the well-being of everyone involved—the child, the volunteer, and the broader team working toward permanency and healing.

If you’re considering becoming a CASA volunteer, know that you won’t be doing it alone. We provide support every step of the way. And when you’re ready, you’ll be a powerful, consistent presence in the life of a child who needs it most.

Our next training begins in August 2025 and it’s not too late to join us. Click the button below to apply to volunteer with the Central SD CASA program today!
